Building a Unified Data Foundation for a Digital Healthcare Enterprise

The client, a fast-growing healthcare services company operating across multiple business units, had evolved as a data-driven organization but its data landscape remained fragmented, manual, and difficult to scale. Critical information was siloed across multiple business systems — including Salesforce, telephony, EHR, and billing platforms with no integrated central repository connecting calls, orders, appointments, billing, and patient data.

Reports were prepared manually, governance over sensitive patient data was limited, and a fragmented BI toolset spanning multiple reporting tools, spreadsheets, and dashboards created inconsistency and low flexibility. Unlocking the next stage of growth as a digital healthcare enterprise required addressing these foundational gaps in data infrastructure and governance.

We designed and implemented a centralized data platform on Microsoft Fabric and Azure to consolidate disparate sources, automate data preparation and reporting, and establish strong governance aligned to medical and healthcare industry compliance to empower business units with faster, more reliable insights to drive growth and improve patient outcomes.

Our Approach

Centralized Data Platform & Unified Data Model

We built a unified data foundation that consolidates information from key business systems — including Salesforce, telephony, EHR, and billing platforms — into a single source of truth for calls, orders, appointments, billing, and patient data. A unified data model was designed to enable consistent, cross-functional analysis.

Key Issues Solved:

  • Siloed data with no integrated, central repository across business units

  • Inconsistent reporting caused by fragmented BI tools and spreadsheets

  • Inability to gain a holistic view of operations and patient journeys

Automated Data Preparation & Power BI Reporting

We replaced manual, time-consuming report preparation with automated data pipelines and a Power BI–based dashboard — starting with Sales — to deliver unified, flexible reporting that scales with the business.

Key Issues Solved:

  • Manual report preparation consuming significant staff time

  • Low flexibility and slow turnaround for business insights

  • Lack of a streamlined, scalable BI toolset

Data Governance for Medical & Healthcare Compliance

A comprehensive data governance framework was established to ensure visibility, control, and trust — especially for sensitive patient data — aligned to medical and healthcare industry compliance standards. Access controls and compliance features were built into the platform from the ground up.

Key Issues Solved:

  • Weak governance with limited visibility and control over sensitive patient data

  • No compliance-aligned framework for medical data handling

  • Low trust in data accuracy and lineage across business units

Cloud-Native Architecture on Microsoft Fabric & Azure

The solution leverages a modern, cloud-native architecture built on Microsoft Fabric and Azure SQL Database, with ingestion via Azure Data Factory, Azure Functions, and AzCopy Utility. The platform includes a Bronze-Silver-Gold data layer model, integrated DevOps and CI/CD pipelines, logging and monitoring via Azure App Insights and Azure Monitor, and security through Azure Active Directory and Azure Key Vault. Data quality, lineage, and cataloging are managed through Azure Purview.

Key Issues Solved:

  • No scalable, enterprise-grade data infrastructure in place

  • Lack of DevOps practices, monitoring, and automated deployments

  • Insufficient security, cataloging, and data lineage capabilities

Phased Delivery for Quick Wins & Scalability

The engagement was structured in two phases. Phase 1 — Establish the Core focused on creating the central data platform from selected sources, launching the initial Power BI dashboard, and delivering quick wins while proving scalability. Phase 2 — Expand & Strengthen extends ingestion to additional sources, builds new dashboards, develops deeper data models and transformations, and introduces full governance, access controls, and compliance features.

Key Issues Solved:

  • Need for early, visible business value to build stakeholder confidence

  • Risk of scope overload without a phased, prioritized approach

  • Requirement for a scalable foundation that grows with the organization

Business Impact & Results

  • Integrated, single source of truth across Salesforce, telephony, EHR, and billing platforms — replacing siloed, disconnected data

  • Faster, more reliable insights through automated data preparation and unified Power BI reporting

  • Stronger governance and compliance with a framework purpose-built for sensitive medical and patient data

  • Reduced manual effort by eliminating spreadsheet-based report preparation and fragmented BI workflows

  • Scalable, enterprise-ready architecture on Microsoft Fabric and Azure — designed to support additional data sources, dashboards, and business units over time

  • Empowered business units to make data-driven decisions with confidence and speed
